Fig Knit-On
A Fiber Art Exhibit and Yarn Bombing Event
Exhibition runs from October 9 31, 2010
Opening Reception: October 9, 2010, 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
In conjunction with NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night
What is a more unlikely scenario than an "underground art show" that features knit and crochet items? The word on the street is that just such a happening is taking hold in that enclave of the NELA art scene, Future Studio, home of Chicken Boy..."
Future Studio is pleased to present Fig Knit-On, a fiber art experience along North Figueroa, between Avenue 56 and Roselawn Street. For the month of October, a group of artists will magically transform the sidewalk by dressing everyday items in varying combinations of fiber material. If youve ever thought to yourself, Hey, that parking meter could use a sweater, or Wouldnt knit flowers look good in that empty planting box, then we have an exhibit for you. The act of Yarn Bombing combines the art of street installation with needlework to create colorful, unexpected, and funny messages in a venue shared by everyone. Enjoy a stroll and marvel in the handmade work attached to street signs, light posts, parking meter posts and other fixtures along the street.
This is a two-fold exhibition, and includes a wall display inside the gallery. Works range from funny to functional; some draw on the rich history of Northeast Los Angeles, while others use unusual materials; and all push the knit/crochet envelope. Participating artists include: Ellen Bloom; Beth Elliott; Jacque Lene Engel; Carmela Gomes; Miriam Gonzalez; Susana Gonzalez; Heather Hoggan; Amy Inouye; Julie Keehner; Artemisia Kosar; Arzu Arda Kosar; Lauri Mraz; Racquel Rocky Ormsby; David Orozco; Noah B. Orozco; Connie Rohman; Joya Roy; Ann Storc; Suzie Stroll; Sherry Thompson; Kacy Treadway.
